A very pretty bird, these Southern Lapwings could be found in various areas we visited. Usually on the ground, we saw at least one pair that seemed to be guarding a nest as they would be very aggressive to anyone who got too close to…

During one of our hikes in Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos we ended up basically hiking in the clouds…
Just ’cause I feel like sharing an assortment of seahorses…
Like I said… there will be more tanagers… This pair of Brazilian Tanagers is certainly a very beautiful set of birds. I kind of like the photos on the barbed wire too… The bright red male is one of the first birds I saw when…
I got to photograph a number of different birds in the parrot family while in Brazil, but I think this Blue-winged Macaw might have been the most cooperative and photogenic. I tried to get some shots of it in flight to really show off its…
A trio of warning signs… One from Congaree National Park in South Carolina, one from Kona in Hawaii, and one from Brazil (I forget the exact location, but they’re fairly common there).
During some hikes around Visconde de Mauá, we saw these butterflies. Every angle I looked at it revealed something new. Whether it is that purple patch that comes and goes with the angle of the light, or those beautiful 88’s on the underside of the…
Ok – switching away from Brazil photos for a bit here today to share some photos from earlier this spring that I finally got around to processing. Some of these turned out better than others – and unfortunately the one I like the most I…
Honestly, I had hoped to find more weird bugs when I was in Brazil… but here are a couple I managed to find.
Rounding out this first set of tanagers (I am pretty sure there will be plenty more) is a pair of Burnished-buff Tanagers. They didn’t visit the fruit very many times, but I was lucky enough to get photos of both the male and female.
Another tanager and another visitor to the fruit we put out while in Teresópolis, this pair of Sayaca Tanagers were probably the most frequent visitor to the fruit, often chasing away other birds.
Samara had the idea to put some fruit out for the birds and one of the first visitors was this pair of Golden-chevroned Tanagers (Thraupis ornata). It is a species endemic to Brazil, so this is another nice find to add to my species list.
Black Capuchin Monkey or Macaco Prego Preto in Portugese (Sapajus nigritus) spotted in Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos during one of our first hikes. We spotted a second one (the last two photos) but I did not get very good photos of it. In fact…
Verruga do Frade means Friar’s Wart in English. See if you can find it below. It is the same photo, but I just cropped it and then rotated the cropped view. This is a mountain range visible from Teresópolis and would have been nice to…
Samara spotted this pair of Green-backed Trogons or sometimes also called Amazonian White-tailed Trogons (Trogon viridis) on the property at our first Airbnb. We watched them for a bit and noticed that they appeared to be building a nest (I looked it up and they…
