Pied-billed Grebes are found pretty much across the entire USA and that is evident by the fact that one of these photos is from Florida while the other is from California. Usually they are fairly difficult birds to photograph because they tend to be somewhat small and skittish and stay further out in the water, but every once in a while you get one that doesn’t mind being photographed. The one I saw in Florida I actually got to watch hunting under the water as it swam around catching tiny fish in just a few feet of very clear water – I was so in awe of just watching it that I didn’t try to photograph it while it was underwater. At a glance they tend to be pretty bland birds, but once you look closer, you see they do indeed have some beauty to them.
