When I first photographed these grasshoppers, I assumed it was two different species… but it turns out that they are just a juvenile and an adult Eastern Lubber Grasshopper (Romalea microptera). They are large grasshoppers – about 2-3.5 inches long with the females being larger than the males. They are flightless and are not very good at jumping either, but they certainly have some striking colors in both stages.
